Folklore, Occult and Contemporary Design in TrueBlack Tarot by Arthur Wang

TrueBlack Tarot is a gorgeous, luxe tarot deck by Arthur Wang.

Illustrated in a style that refuses to be placed in any specific era or time, each card emerges from the darkness a story in itself, embodied in a painting that is both ancient and contemporary.

Core to the concept of TrueBlack is the interconnectedness of all, embodied in the stars and skies shared by humanity through all lands and epochs. Each box, booklet, and card back is adorned with maps of the heavens.

Every card back features a gloss-on-matte starmap, and every card title is detailed in a glossy finish.

All 22 Major Arcana cards feature an individual and distinctive additional gloss design, specifically illustrated to complement the card.

TrueBlack is the brainchild of Arthur Wang, designer and illustrator. Growing up in NYC’s myriad mix of cultures, lifestyles, and beliefs, it was easy for him to become fascinated with the occult from a young age.
Books of anthropological folklore, paranormal studies, and witchcraft throughout all ages and geographical locations filled his shelves, and from there, the marriage of the occult studies with his design background was an easy connection to make. He has since been working full-time in product design while creating True Black.
