The Lonely God – “Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.”
Alice X. Zhang, freelance designer, illustrator, and portrait artist, graduated the Rhode Island School of Design with a major in Graphic Design.
We saw her ongoing film poster illustration project “MOMENTS“, now some of her selected Doctor Who and Sherlock artworks have been officially licensed by BBC.
Some are currently available to buy online in the The BBC Shop, as well as in larger sizes from Big Chief Studios.
The Lonely God: “Reference photos were provided by the BBC. They also chose this title “The Lonely God” out of a list I gave them (I was given no info on the special episode aside from the refs) so take from that what you will. :] We’ll all find out what he’s about in less than 24 hours anyway!!
Painted in Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom Cintiq tablet; some textures and fire stock from cgtextures. Thank you SO MUCH TO EVERYONE for your immense support on this series of mine. I was absolutely thrilled to get this opportunity, and after all my struggling, quite proud of the resulting set!! THANK YOU GUYS!!” Alice
The Roar of Our Stars – “Look at the sky. It’s not dark and black and without character… the black is, in fact, deep blue. And over there: lighter blue, and blowing through the blues and blackness the winds swirling through the air and then shining, burning, bursting through: the stars! And you see how they roar their light. Everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.”
“This work is part of my official series of Doctor Who poster-paintings based on the newer seasons. This one is of the Eleventh Doctor as played by Matt Smith. Originally commissioned by KLCx, thank you! Ref image from the 2010 Christmas Special.”Alice
The Turn of the Universe – “He’s like fire and ice and rage. He’s like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun. He’s ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the universe. And… he’s wonderful.”
“I was commissioned by Big Chief Studios to do some more Doctor Who art! This is a portrait of the Tenth Doctor as played by David Tennant, and is a part ofmy official Doctor Who poster series. This painting took many many hours (and tears) and many reference images… total painting time… I lost count… but I finished it sometime in August 2013. Painted in Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom Cintiq tablet.” Alice
The Parting of the Ways – “Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once — everybody lives!”
“Rose, before I go, I just want to tell you, you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And d’you know what? So was I.”
“Portrait of the Ninth Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston – it’s meant to be a dually melancholy/hopeful piece, as it was inspired by both the triumphant scene in The Doctor Dances, as well as his bittersweet regeneration scene at the end of the season. (I think the nanogenes really resembles the golden light of regeneration? Maybe it’s intentional, as they both cause change/revival? These were my thoughts…)
This painting took even MORE hours and tears than my Tenth Doctor painting, which I didn’t think was actually possible… I’m sorry, I have to talk about this. I was basically crying to everyone I knew, I was struggling with the likeness and the pose and just EVERYTHING, think I worked on this on-and-off for nearly four months. OTL I had to repaint the hands so many times; in the end, I just set up lights and had my poor boyfriend (who had to listen all the crying) do the same pose and took my own reference photos… Aaanyway. Finally finished. Painted in Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom Cintiq tablet.”Alice
“So, if you didn’t already know, this year I’ve been getting into the comics industry – been working on a variety of cover artworks for various titles, my most major project being Doctor Who!!
Here is the first one I did – Cover A for issue #1 of Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor by Titan Comics. Featuring David Tennant as The Doctor!”Alice
This is Cover A for issue #1 of Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor by Titan Comics. Featuring Matt Smith as The Doctor!
This is Cover A for issue #1 of Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor by Titan Comics. Featuring Peter Capaldi as The Doctor!
The Song of Your Sadness -“Oh Amy, I hear the song of your sadness.”
“I’m not sad.”
“Then why are you crying?”
“This is my tribute to the magnificent Amy Pond, who inspired Vincent van Gogh in her adventures with the Doctor. I hope if Amy stayed with Vincent longer he might’ve painted something like this – something that showed her inner sadness, something he could empathize with. This work is part of my official series of Doctor Who poster-paintings based on the newer seasons.
Little disclaimer! I researched van Gogh paintings like Starry Night and his Sunflowers series for this work, but I want to reiterate that I’m not claiming to be an Impressionist nor am I saying I am anywhere near as skilled as the great painter himself… this piece is a conceptual work, done with my own artistic style and choices with some influence that’s meant to recall van Gogh’s style. Reference from the episode “Vincent and the Doctor.””Alice
Virtuoso – “Painted this over Livestream in about 4 hours, you can view the full recording at my new Youtube channel. Thank you very much to all who stayed and watched! I have always loved all imagery of Sherlock Holmes playing the violin, I find it very striking and it’s one of his most recognizable and interesting character traits. This piece is inspired by BBC’s Sherlock series (I cannot possibly recommend this show more!)
Time-lapsed process video can be watched here. Drawn and painted in Adobe Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. Reference from here.”Alice
